The 34th Grand Marian Procession of Intramuros Part 3: The Canonically Crowned Images of the Philippines

From Private Devotions to Widespread Ones
(The Coronadas)

What does "Coronada" stands for?

A Canonical Coronation is an act of the Pope, duly expressed in an Apostolic Letter called a Papal Bull, wherein His Holiness recognizes the Marian Image under a specific title being venerated in a certain locality. The venerated image should be historically old, acclaimed, and in times of need serves as a beacon of faith and hope among the people. Coronation is one form of reverence frequently shown to images of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Canonical Coronation also manifests recognition of the fervent devotion of the faithful of a locality to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The Catholic custom of crowning images is a very ancient practice. It originated in 1640 when Alejandro Sfortia, Marquis of Placencia died, leaving in his will a provision in which a large sum of money was to be invested and the proceeds to form a fund for the purchase of crowns of precious metals for the coronation of the most celebrated images in the world.It is especially from the end of the 16th century that in the West, the practice became widespread for the faithful, both religious and laity, to crown images of the Blessed Virgin. The popes not only endorsed this devout custom but on many occasions, either personally or through bishop-delegates, carried out the coronation of Marian Images. The growth of the custom led to the composition of a special rite for crowning images of Mary, and in the 19th century this was incorporated into the Roman liturgy. By means of this rite the Church proclaims that the Blessed Virgin Mary is rightly regarded and invoked as Queen of heaven and earth. The glory of Mary, who is a daughter of Adam and Mother to us all, not only honors the people of God, but also ennobles the entire human family.

A Coronada stature means that The Catholic Church, through The Holy See, officially recognized and proclaimed that The Blessed Virgin Mary had granted favors and blessings or formidable intercessions for her devotees through the centuries.

The Festejada image, the Immaculate Conception; another carroza with floral decorations that does not look good during the day but transforms at night...

The beautiful Triunfal carroza of the Immaculate Conception...a vision, a dream...

From soldiers to deacons...

Another GMP comes to a close...

The Festejada Image as it make its way to Manila Cathedral

As the carroza passes me by, I thought, after 4 hours, finally the last carroza...

As it turns towards Manila Cathedral, I thought wait...another GMP comes to a close...

And as it slowly moves further away, I thought, that's another year of waiting for the next GMP.

Night is falling, dear Mother, the long day is o'er,
And before thy loved image I'm kneeling once more,
To thank thee for keeping me safe through the day,
To ask thee this night to keep evil away.

Many times have I fallen today, Mother dear;
Many graces neglected since last I knelt here.
Wilt thou not in pity, my own Mother mild,
Ask Jesus to pardon the sins of thy child?

I am going to rest, for the day's work is done,
Its hours and moments have passed one by one.
And the God Who will judge me has counted them all;
He has numbered each grace, He has counted each fall.

In His book they are written against the last day
0 Mother, ask Jesus to wash them away;
For one drop of His Blood for which sinners was spilt
Is sufficient to cleanse the whole world from its guilt.

And if e'er the dawn I should draw my last breath;
If the sleep that I take be the long sleep of death,
Be near me, dear Mother, for Jesus' dear sake
When my soul on Eternity's shore shall awake.

Amen.
